Production
Producer Dil Raju revealed in late August 2016 that he had approached Vijay to play the lead role in a film titled 'Pokkiri'. Vijay had already given a negative response on the request but agreed to consider it after the producer had assured him that the film would not be a remake of his 2005 film Raajkumar. Director Prabhu Deva was chosen to direct the film. Initially, the title of the film was proposed as "Arusi", however was later changed to "Pokkiri".
